Below is a brief description of just one of these world class flats fishing destinations!
Isla de Juventude, Cuba
Isla de Juventud is a large island off the southern coast of Cuba almost directly south of Havana. To the east runs the Archipelago de los Canarreos, an 80-mile string of pristine keys that connect Isla de Juventude and Cayo Largo. The unspoiled flats are considered one of the Caribbean’s best places to get a Grand or even Super Grand Slam. These waters are protected under Cuban National Marine Parks and have been absent of commercial fishing since 1996.
The Archipelago de los Canarreos is a major draw for Tarpon fanatics with 30-80lb fish easily found year-round. It’s monster 100+lb fish show up in the spring and summer adding to its already abundant population and making IDJ a world-class Tarpon fishery. Singles and small pods are regularly found poling the flats on sunny days and blind casting into deep channels is a proven strategy when the clouds roll in. Bonefish, Permit and Snook are found is great numbers as are Jacks, Cudas and sharks. There are also many reefs along our journey that can easily be fished for Grouper, Sea Bass, Grouper, Mutton Snapper, Grunts, Trigger fish and Parrotfish.
